The Problem
Why Pressure Alone Destroys Brick
Brick is fired clay. It is porous, and the mortar holding it together is softer than the brick itself.
A powerful jet drives water into the wall, blows out the pointing, and leaves a patchy orange finish where it has stripped the surface. On older properties, that damage is permanent.
This is why I do not clean brick with brute force.
My approach is different because I have to live with the result.
I am the one who surveys your property, I mix every chemical on site, and I do the rinse myself.
I hold the spraying certificates to use professional brick cleaners legally. I have cleaned Grade II listed buildings in Cheshire where mistakes are not an option.
That is the reason conservation officers and local builders refer work to me.
I am David. I run Exterior Cleaning Professionals from Altrincham.
Since 2007, I have been cleaning brickwork across Hale, Bowdon, Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Knutsford, Sale, Timperley, Didsbury, Cheadle and Stockport.
I get called in after a general cleaner has tried high pressure and left tiger stripes in the mortar or after a homeowner has tried brick acid from a builder’s merchant and burned the face of the brick.
- I lead with chemistry, and use water in a controlled way.
- I hold PA1, PA6 and PA6AW City & Guilds certificates.
- I carry £5 million Public Liability insurance.

What Makes Us Stand Out
Brickwork & Stains I Clean Weekly
Every brick type needs a different approach. Historic lime mortar needs a mild, neutral pH clean. Modern hard cement pointing can take a stronger treatment. I match the method to the building.
- Victorian and Edwardian red bricks
- Accrington and engineering brick on old mills and commercial units
- White efflorescence salts leaching from new brickwork
- Green algae and black lichen on garden walls and boundary walls
- Buff, yellow and light wirecut brick affected by algae
- Sandstone quoins and brick blends
- Soot blackening and carbon staining from busy roads and old industry, common across Stockport and the M60 corridor
- Paint run, mortar splashes, cement smears and fire damage on new builds and renovations

How I Clean Your Bricks Safely
Survey and Test Patch
I visit, or you send clear photos. I always complete a test patch in a discreet area. This shows you the final colour, proves the mortar is safe, and allows me to confirm the exact chemical strength.
Site Protection and Treatment
We sheet up, pre-wet all planting, and cover vents and windows. I apply the correct specialist cleaner at low pressure. For traffic film and atmospheric dirt I use a professional alkaline degreaser. For soot, mineral staining and rust runs I use a controlled acidic cleaner. The product is left to dwell. This is what lifts the staining from within the pore.
Controlled Steam Rinse
After dwelling, the treatment and staining are removed with a controlled low pressure rinse, or with 150 degree steam where appropriate. This removes the dirt without scouring or scarring the brick face. You will see the original colour return as we rinse.
Neutralise and Final Check
The wall is fully neutralised and rinsed. All run-off is managed safely. We leave the area clean and tidy. I walk the job with you and provide after photos for your records and simple advice on pointing repairs if I have found any weak areas during the clean. For commercial clients I can provide a full RAMS pack.

I do not offer sandblasting. I do not use high pressure on old brickwork. If your brick is spalling or the mortar is failing, I will advise you to have it repointed first. I will say no to work if cleaning would cause damage.

What do you get with me
You are hiring a trained, experienced, qualified brick cleaning operator, not a labourer with a lance.
I am legally qualified to apply the professional acidic and alkaline cleaners that brickwork requires, and I know how to protect your borders, lawns, pets and drains.
Brickwork cleaning now forms a large part of my diary from spring to autumn.
I clean up to two storeys from the ground using water-fed poles. For larger commercial elevations I work with IPAF licensed MEWP operators.
The cleaning happens at low pressure, protecting the brick face and the mortar joints.

What Makes Us Stand Out
How Much Does Brick Cleaning Cost?
To give you a clear guide: a single garden wall in Timperley or Cheadle with light algae is often between £275 and £425.
A full front elevation of a Victorian terrace in Didsbury or Sale with heavy soot staining is typically £595 to £895. A large detached home in Hale, Bowdon or Alderley Edge with multiple elevations can range from £950 to £1,500.
Price is based on size, access, the type of staining, and the age of the brick. Send photos, and I will give you a fixed price back the same day.
I am based in WA14 and I work across South Manchester and North Cheshire every week. Recent work includes a soot-blackened Victorian semi in Didsbury, a full algae clean on a boundary wall in Wilmslow, and a paint removal on a stone and brick property in Alderley Edge.
FAQ
Brick Cleaning FAQ's
Will this damage my mortar?
No. Damage is caused by high pressure lances held too close. My method uses chemicals to do the work, followed by a rinse that is lower pressure than most domestic pressure washers. I inspect every joint before starting.
Can you clean a listed building?
Yes. I have worked on Grade II listed properties in, Manchester, Cheshire, Knutsford and the surrounding villages. I use the gentlest effective method and I provide method statements and COSHH sheets for conservation officers when required.
Will the black soot come back?
Carbon staining is caused by the environment. After a full clean the brick will stay clear for many years. I can apply a breathable water repellent on suitable brickwork which helps to slow future soiling without trapping moisture.
Can you remove paint from brick?
In many cases, yes. I use a different poultice system for paint. I will test it first to check the brick underneath is sound. I will be honest about the expected result before you commit.
Is the chemical safe for my garden?
Yes, when applied by a qualified person. I am certified to use these products. We protect all planting, we contain the rinse water, and we neutralise the area fully after the clean.
Want to see what your brick should look like?
Send me two or three photos. I will tell you the brick type, the best method, and give you a clear price.
