The Problem
Is Your Brickwork Looking Dull & Dirty?
It’s easy to overlook the state of your brickwork until the damage becomes too obvious to ignore. Bricks, whether on the exterior of your home or as part of an outdoor structure, are constantly exposed to environmental factors that can cause them to degrade. These can include:
- Dirt and grime: Over time, air pollution, dust, and other contaminants can stain and darken brick surfaces, making them look old and neglected.
- Moss and algae growth: In areas where moisture is common, moss and algae can take root, further deteriorating your brickwork and creating unsightly patches.
- Weathering: Harsh weather conditions, including rain, wind, and sun, can cause wear on your bricks, making them appear faded and worn.
- Lime stains: Particularly common in new brickwork, lime staining occurs when water reacts with the minerals in the brick, leaving unsightly white spots on the surface.
While these issues may seem minor at first, longer they remain untreated, more difficult and costly it becomes to fix them. It’s important to address any signs of deterioration as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage.
Why You Should Act Now
While brick cleaning may seem like a minor task, benefits of having your brickwork cleaned far outweigh the costs of letting it deteriorate. Regular brick cleaning:
- Enhances curb appeal: Clean brick surfaces instantly boost the appearance of your home or business, making it more inviting and appealing to visitors or potential buyers.
- Increases property value: Well-maintained brickwork contributes to the overall value of your property. If you’re looking to sell, a clean exterior can make a big difference in how quickly your property moves on the market.
- Prevents long-term damage: As mentioned, uncleaned brickwork is more prone to cracks, moisture buildup, and other issues that can be costly to repair. Proactively cleaning your bricks is a wise investment in maintaining the longevity of your property.
For homeowners in Alderley Edge, keeping your brickwork clean is a simple way to look after your property and keep it looking its best. Maybe you’ve noticed some stubborn stains, a bit of moss, or you just want your brickwork to look fresher—whatever the reason, we’re here to help get things back in shape.

Ignoring Your Brickwork
When brickwork isn’t properly maintained, effects can go beyond just visual damage. Dirt, grime, and moisture can seep into porous surface of bricks, leading to:
- Cracking and chipping: Prolonged exposure to contaminants can weaken the structure of your brickwork. It can cause cracks and chips that could eventually compromise the safety and stability of your property.
- Mould and mildew: Moss and algae thrive in damp conditions. As these growths spread, they can contribute to the development of mould and mildew, which can damage your bricks and make them look unsightly.
- Higher repair costs: The longer you wait to clean your brickwork, the more likely it is that cleaning alone won’t restore its original condition. In some cases, you may need to repoint bricks, replace damaged bricks, which is a far more costly process.
Having your bricks professionally cleaned, you can prevent these issues and keep your property looking beautiful while extending the life of your brick surfaces.

FAQ
Brick Cleaning FAQ's
Will this damage my mortar?
No. Damage is caused by high pressure lances held too close. My method uses chemicals to do the work, followed by a rinse that is lower pressure than most domestic pressure washers. I inspect every joint before starting.
Can you clean a listed building?
Yes. I have worked on Grade II listed properties in, Manchester, Cheshire, Knutsford and the surrounding villages. I use the gentlest effective method and I provide method statements and COSHH sheets for conservation officers when required.
Will the black soot come back?
Carbon staining is caused by the environment. After a full clean the brick will stay clear for many years. I can apply a breathable water repellent on suitable brickwork which helps to slow future soiling without trapping moisture.
Can you remove paint from brick?
In many cases, yes. I use a different poultice system for paint. I will test it first to check the brick underneath is sound. I will be honest about the expected result before you commit.
Is the chemical safe for my garden?
Yes, when applied by a qualified person. I am certified to use these products. We protect all planting, we contain the rinse water, and we neutralise the area fully after the clean.
